My film Charlotte and Her Boyfriend: The Melodrama (1999), commissioned for Jean-Luc Godard’s 70th anniversary at the 8th Biennale of Moving Image in Geneva, is a remake of Godard’s largely disregarded first film Charlotte et son Jules (1958). It is unusual remake: made without having seen the original film. I had only ever read about Charlotte et son Jules as a footnote in books about Godard.
Charlotte and Her Boyfriend: The Melodrama is a construction built along generic lines and always related to and dependent upon other, absent films. Charlotte is not your usual cinematic remake. Its aim is not to recreate Godard's filmic text, but to recreate what it is that makes it a text by Godard—those “Godardisms".
